of elections and declaration of their results.
5.The Chief Election Commissioner is
appointed by the President.
6.The Election Commission of India
also enforces the Code of Conduct and punishes any candidate or party for
violating it.
Question 2. Why do
you think people should take an active part in the election process?
Ans. People should always play an
active role in the election process. Due to this active role, the right and
qualified candidates are selected and people are aware of the political issues.
When the people play an active role in the elections, political parties and
candidates are also under pressure and they have to ensure their accountability
before the public. When the people play an active role, the right government
can be elected in the election and public opinion is also formed.
Question 3. What
are the challenges of a free and fair election?
Ans. Holding free and fair elections
is a huge challenge and these challenges can be understood through the
following points:
(1)Due to the use of excessive money
in elections, it becomes difficult to conduct elections in a proper manner. It
is a very big challenge to stop the use of excessive money to conduct free and
fair elections.
(2)A big challenge in holding free
and fair elections is that through elections, candidates of criminal background
can also contest elections and win elections, so how to prevent them is also a
big challenge.
(3)A challenge in holding free and
fair elections also comes to the fore that during elections people do not get
proper choice due to which people show disinterest in voting.
(4)In free and fair elections, there
is also a challenge that when tickets are given by political parties,
preference is given to relations which is a very big challenge, through which
only relatives contest and win elections.
(5)A challenge to free and fair
elections is also that big political parties try to influence smaller parties
and independent candidates. Smaller political parties and independent
candidates get influenced by these big political parties which is a big
challenge.
Question 4. You
may have heard about the news related to corruption in the elections. Such as
including false names in the electoral rolls, misuse of government facilities
and officials by the ruling party, excessive use of funds and intimidation of
voters and rigging on polling day. Suggest some ways to fix them.
Ans. Including false names in the
electoral rolls, misuse of government facilities and officials by the ruling
party, excessive use of funds and intimidation of voters and rigging on the
polling day, these types of problems get to be seen and heard during the
elections.
(1) During the election, if a
candidate or party uses excessive money in the election campaign, the
nomination of that candidate should be cancelled immediately.
(2) All the names included in the
electoral roll should be declared valid only after scrutiny. For this, the
Election Commission should take stringent steps so that no fake voters of any
kind can be involved.
(3) If government facilities or
officials are used by the ruling party during the elections, the Election
Commission should immediately take action against such candidates and political
party and also cancel their nominations.
(4) In order to prevent excessive use
of money in elections, the Election Commission should make more stringent rules
and if a candidate or political party spends more than the prescribed amount in
his area, his/her nomination should also be cancelled.
(5) If any candidate or political
party tries to intimidate the voters in the election, then the Election
Commission should use adequate police force and give protection to the voters
and take any such complaint seriously.
(6) In order to prevent rigging on
the polling day, the Election Commission should deploy police force to make
frequent visits to the polling stations and take adequate steps to ensure that
free and fair elections are held.
